In 2021, six visionary faith leaders and their congregations in Oakland recognized the urgent need to address the social, economic, and health challenges facing communities of color. From this shared commitment, Impact Oakland Now (ION) was born — a faith-driven think tank dedicated to creating lasting, positive change in Oakland.
A Collective Response to Community Needs
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affected African American and other marginalized communities, highlighting gaps in access to healthcare, food, and essential services. ION sprang into action, providing timely COVID-19 information, facilitating testing and vaccinations, and distributing nearly 4,000 boxes of food and vegetables each week to residents in need.
This rapid mobilization reflected the deep roots of ION’s leaders in social activism, community engagement, and transformational work. With a combined local membership of over 3,100 active community members, ION became a powerful platform to address inequalities and improve the quality of life for Oakland’s most vulnerable residents.
Guided by Faith, Committed to Action
ION’s founding members — including Pastor Zachery Carey, Bishop Keith L. Clark, Bishop Brondon & Pastor Maria Reems, Bishop Kevin D. Barnes, Pastor Michael W. Wallace, and Pastor Rodney Smith — share a vision of a more equitable, thriving Oakland. Drawing on their faith, influence, and organizational experience, they collaborate on strategies in areas such as:
- Social justice and public policy
- Criminal justice reform
- Health and wellness, including food security
- Quality, affordable housing
- Educational initiatives that foster academic excellence
A Vision for a Thriving Oakland
Impact Oakland Now serves as both a voice and a force for communities of color. By harnessing the power of faith-based leadership and community engagement, ION works to ensure that every resident has the opportunity to thrive, fostering human dignity, mutual respect, and a sustainable environment for all.
Through collaboration, compassion, and faith, ION continues to transform Oakland — one initiative, one family, and one community at a time.
